Meet the largest fish in the sea - reaching lengths of 40 feet (12 meters) or more. Whale sharks are slow-moving, filter-feeding sharks - one of only three known filter feeding shark species (along with the basking shark and the megamouth shark), and fortunately for most sea-dwellers - and us! - their favorite meal is plankton.
The whale shark's flattened head sports a blunt snout above its mouth with short barbels protruding from its nostrils. Its back and sides are grey to brown with white spots among pale vertical and horizontal stripes, and its belly is white. A very interesting fact about whale sharks is that each individual's spot pattern is unique and no two whale sharks are the same. So, in a way, this can be used to identify them as a "fingerprint".
With a lifespan of up to 100 years, the whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea. Despite its size, the whale shark does not pose significant danger to humans. Whale sharks are docile fish and sometimes allow swimmers to catch a ride, although this practice is discouraged by shark scientists and conservationists because of the disturbance to the sharks.
The whale shark is targeted by commercial fisheries in several areas where they seasonally aggregate. Even though the population is unknown and the species is considered vulnerable by the IUCN, they continue to be hunted in parts of Asia.
Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) is an amazing organisation that carries out whale shark research and fosters community focused conservation initiatives in the Maldives. They do incredible work and through it, have grown to become the only long-term organisation dedicated to studying the iconic, yet vulnerable whale shark species in the Maldives. They seek to advance the field of whale shark knowledge and to advocate for sound conservation policy in the Maldives. By encouraging and valuing community and industry stakeholder participation, they are able to leverage the scientific research to safeguard the rich biodiversity and fragile marine ecosystems that are the basis for not only whale sharks, but also life, livelihood and culture in the Maldives.
Through scientific research and a reverence for ecological principles, their conservation strategy encourages people of all backgrounds and cultures to participate in keeping the fragile Maldivian ecosystems healthy and sound for future generations. By developing dynamic research studies, ensuring transparent communication of findings, and facilitating educational opportunities focusing on the importance of biological diversity, species conservation and environmental stewardship, they can advance the field of research and foster effective conservation initiatives. We, at Rebel, are so excited about partnering with them for our whale shark print and all the great work we will be able to do together!
$30 from the retail price of each pair will go directly to our partners at the MWSRP!
Please note that when the elastic waist band of the men's beach shorts is stretched, each size gains approximately 25 cm (or 10 inches) around the waist.
Women's beach shorts are designed to be worn at the hip bone, so when choosing your size it would be best if that is the circumferance you measure.
Recommended garment care: To make sure your Rebel print colors remain bright and vivid for as long as possible, please hand wash in warm water, line dry, and refrain from ironing.
